Just one further point, my faith in “Prime Time Investigates” is no longer robost. I now wonder about the veracity of the programme on home care and on other matters. But maybe that is not fair and is the equivalent of believing that most clerics are abusers. It is also unfortunate timing that the IFTAs took place before the publication of the reports from the Broadcasting Authority and the RTÉ Board. However, because of the government's failure to set up a statutory inspectorate we cannot be sure that all nursing homes are maintained to such a high standard.
'I am disturbed to learn that 14 of the 19 County Wicklow nursing homes were inspected just once last year. I am calling on the Minister for Health to make bi-annual inspections mandatory,' he added. The programme sparked serious questions about the care of the elderly in private and public facilities and has raised concerns for those with elderly relatives in care. The RTÉ programme investigated conditions in the Leas Cross nursing home in Swords and showed patients not getting proper care for bedsores, care assistants and a nurse sleeping during night shifts and a woman sleeping in a restraining chair. Ast week's Prime Time programme which highlighted poor conditions in a Dublin nursing home has prompted a wave of calls for stricter regulation of the private nursing home sector.

I have no doubt that, if we hadn’t been in the position to challenge them through the courts, the award would probably have gone to Mission to Prey. ‘ICA Bootcamp’ was the best reality programme, while the Eamonn Coghlan ‘Man on a Mission’ documentary was the best sporting programme of the year.

Given that abuse of power, it is somewhat surprising that IFTA gave it an award this year and, to me, it smacks of the media closing ranks and failing to examine its own conduct. Maybe I should not be surprised because that is mostly what professions do when their wrongdoing is exposed. I am aware that some people might say “But we expect more from the church”. I no longer do as I see it as a human institution riddled with human frailty . Those who mistakenly want to broad-brush the whole of the secular media as anti-Catholic need to heed what was said by CDF head Cardinal William Levada at last week’s abuse symposium in Rome.
IN WHAT’S ONE of the most disturbing scenes in tonight’s shocking Prime Time investigation into the treatment of residents at Mayo’s Áras Attracta, 53-year-old Ivy McGinty is repeatedly denied use of the bathroom by a staff-member. This is reminiscent of Roman Polanski winning several awards at a European film festival in December 2010 shortly after surviving his close shave with extradition. Some of his admirers made little effort to conceal the fact that the awards represented a vote of solidarity for Polanski as a result of his unfortunate ordeal.
